The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto

ザ・リッツ・カールトン京都

One of the rare Ritz-Carltons that gives Platinum-and-above members free breakfast for two, which makes it unusually good value for the brand. There is no club lounge, and room upgrades are hit-and-miss for Platinum but have reached river-view rooms and even a suite for Titanium members.

Breakfast policy

Excellent

Free breakfast for two, a hotel-specific exception

Ritz-Carlton is normally exempt from Marriott's elite breakfast benefit, but this hotel gives Platinum members breakfast for up to two people (reports from 2025 and 2026).

Main venue is La Locanda, 07:00-10:30 per the official site: a buffet (Pierre Hermé pastries, salads, cheese, fruit) plus one cooked egg dish or pancakes/French toast from a menu.

Japanese options: a Japanese set from Mizuki, reserved the day before, and Japanese à la carte items (grilled fish, miso soup, rice or porridge) on the La Locanda menu in 2026.

A 2026 Platinum report was offered in-room dining as an alternative on one morning. No surcharge reported.

Titanium / Ambassador · Top-tier

Excellent

Free for two; in-suite delivery reported

Titanium members report the same free breakfast for two at La Locanda or the Japanese set.

A Titanium member upgraded to a suite in 2024 had breakfast delivered to the room at no charge and rated the Japanese set above the Western one.

Upgrade track record

Platinum Elite · Mid-tier

Limited

Hit-and-miss; river view only on some stays

A Platinum member on points (published Nov 2025) got no upgrade because the hotel was full, only a top-floor city-view room.

A Platinum member (published Jun 2026) was given a city-view deluxe king, then moved to a Grand Deluxe Kamogawa river-view room mid-stay after asking again; Nightly Upgrade Awards for a suite were declined.

Booking the entry Deluxe city-view room is the norm; expect river view to depend on occupancy.

Titanium / Ambassador · Top-tier

Good

River-view upgrades usual; a suite on record

A Titanium member in 2024 booked the city-view Deluxe and was upgraded to the Kamogawa Suite (described as seven categories up) on the morning of arrival.

A Titanium member on a November weekend (post 2021, updated 2025) went from Deluxe to Grand Deluxe Kamogawa with a river view.

Even a Gold member in December (post 2025) received a two-category upgrade, suggesting quieter periods help.

Early check-in / late checkout

Platinum Elite · Mid-tier

Good

16:00 granted in recent reports

Standard checkout is 12:00; a Platinum member received 16:00 checkout (published Nov 2025).

Early check-in is not reliable: a 2026 Platinum guest arriving around 13:30 waited until after 15:00 for the room.

Titanium / Ambassador · Top-tier

Good

16:00 confirmed at check-in

A Titanium member's 16:00 request was confirmed immediately at check-in in 2024.

The same 2024 guest found the suite ready on an 11:00 arrival; one report only, so early check-in is not a pattern.

Kids & bed-sharing

Ritz Kids extras; sharing and pricing rules unconfirmed

A family stay (published Nov 2025) received a Ritz Kids explorer passport and hat, stickers from staff that earn an ice cream, a kids' message card and macarons.

Children's à la carte dishes at dinner started around ¥800 in that report; staff adapted dishes on request.

Bed-sharing age, extra-bed fees and children's breakfast pricing could not be confirmed from the official site or a stay report (third-party booking sites give conflicting figures, not used).

  • Whether late checkout beyond 16:00 is ever granted.
